Easy Chinese Steamed Bao Buns

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast

  • 3/4 cup warm water (around 110°F/45°C)

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions:

  1. Activate yeast:
Mix warm water and sugar in a bowl, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. Make the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil.

  3. Knead:
Mix and knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if too sticky.

  4. First rise:
Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  5. Shape the buns:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8-10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly and fold in half or roll into the classic oval shape.

  6. Second rise:
Place the buns on parchment paper squares (to prevent sticking) inside your steamer basket. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

  7. Steam:
Prepare your steamer (bamboo or metal) over boiling water. Steam the buns for 10-12 minutes until puffed and cooked through.

  8. Serve:
Carefully remove from steamer and enjoy warm! Perfect for filling with pork, chicken, or veggies
