Easy Chinese Steamed Bao Buns
Ingredients:
-
2 cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tablespoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon instant yeast
-
3/4 cup warm water (around 110°F/45°C)
-
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
-
1/4 teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon baking powder
Instructions:
-
Activate yeast:
Mix warm water and sugar in a bowl, then sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. -
Make the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. -
Knead:
Mix and knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a bit more flour if too sticky. -
First rise:
Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. -
Shape the buns:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8-10 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly and fold in half or roll into the classic oval shape. -
Second rise:
Place the buns on parchment paper squares (to prevent sticking) inside your steamer basket. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes. -
Steam:
Prepare your steamer (bamboo or metal) over boiling water. Steam the buns for 10-12 minutes until puffed and cooked through. -
Serve:
Carefully remove from steamer and enjoy warm! Perfect for filling with pork, chicken, or veggies
